A little history...
Sebastian County Detention Center, located at 801 South A in Fort Smith, was originally constructed in 1995 at a cost of $6,179,646, with “bed space” capacity of 266 inmates. In comparison, the old jail previous located on the top floor of the Court House, housed a maximum of 77 inmates. We reached maximum capacity of 266 inmates within a month of opening the new facility.
The current jail originally contained 44,700 square feet of housing, administration and cooking areas when constructed in 1995. The design of this facility was made with the intention of adding two (2) more male felony pods (96 more inmate beds) to the rear of the facility.
In 2007 the decision was made to proceed with the expansion, due to overcrowding issues in the jail. The expansion cost for adding an addition 90 inmate beds was $4,142,657.
