Qualification to Vote

If you have never registered to vote, you must do so 30 days before the election in which you want to be qualified to vote.  

To register to vote in Arkansas, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be an Arkansas resident (residing in Arkansas at least 30 days prior to the first election in which you will vote).
  • Be age 18 or turn 18 on or before the next election.
  • Not be a convicted felon whose sentence has not been discharged or pardoned.
  • Not be presently adjudged as mentally incompetent as to your ability to vote by a court of competent jurisdiction.

To obtain an application to register to vote:

  • Come by the county Clerk's Office in either Fort Smith or Greenwood (see location information on the left)
  • Download the application from the Secretary of State's Website [link]
  • Pick up an application from State Revenue Office, Public library, Public assistance agency, Disability agency, Military recruitment office, Arkansas National Guard

 

Absentee Ballot

When voting by absentee ballot, you will need to submit a current copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows the name and address of the voter unless the voter is: 

  1. A member of the uniformed services on active duty who is absent from the county on election day because of active duty
  2. A member of the merchant marine who is absent from the county on election day because of his or her service in the merchant marine
  3. The spouse or dependent of a member identified in (1) or (2) above who is absent from the county on election day because of the active duty or service of the member
  4. A person who is a resident of a long-term care or residential care facility licensed by the state is not required to provide proof of identity before voting.  A person not required to provide proof of identity will need to provide documentation from the administrator of the facility attesting that the person is a resident of the facility.
